15.2 @* and @/: Generate and Allow Line Breaks

The @* command forces a line break in all output formats. The @/ command allows a line break (printed manual only).

The @/ command can often be useful within urls (see section @url, @uref{url[, text][, replacement]}), which tend to be long and are otherwise unbreakable. For example:

produces

The official Texinfo home page is on the GNU web site: http://www.gnu.org/software/gnu/texinfo.

Without the @/ commands, TeX would have nowhere to break the url. @/ has no effect in other output formats.
