17 Other Data Formats
*********************

While the GNU gettext tools deal mainly with POT and PO files, they
can also manipulate a couple of other data formats.

For support for many document formats, such as plain text, MarkDown,
manual pages, XML, DocBook, and others, you can use the ‘po4a’ tools
().

For LibreOffice document formats, such as ‘.odt’ files, there are no
PO file based workflows. Instead, you can use
   • Lokalize () with the menu actions
_Project > Create OpenDocument translation project_ and _File >
     Merge translation into OpenDocument_, or
   • OmegaT (Wikipedia: , home
     page: , code:
     ).
With these tools, a translator can translate LibreOffice document
directly, without going through the workflow with POT and PO files.
(Internally, they use XLIFF or TMX files for storage of the
translations.) Alternatively, you can have a workflow with an XLIFF
file instead of a PO file, through the Translate Toolkit
 (see its documentation).
